Special E-Brief June 2018
In the current climate of school shootings, we have anguished over the potentials that may follow the ongoing rise in active shooter and other critical events in schools everywhere. There is nothing more critical than school safety, specifically in the subject of active shooters.
A White Paper by Chesley Brown
Unfortunately, we live in a world where the active shooter crisis appears to be growing, with no sign or indication it will decrease any time soon. The FBI’s study of active shooter incidents between 2000 and 2013 revealed an average of approximately 11.4 incidents occurring each year during that time frame. However, in 2014 and 2015, the FBI recorded 20 incidents each of those (2) years. In their most recent study of 2016 and 2017, the statistics reflect that the average number of incidents in those years rose to (25). From 2000 to 2013, nearly a quarter of all active shooter incidents occurred at educational facilities.
We want our children to be well educated, and to be safe in the learning environment. Having children ourselves, no one knows better than we as parents, teachers and headmasters the importance of providing a safe haven at our schools.
While many companies offer active shooter training, most lack the true ability to evaluate, assess and develop better strategic plans in response to recent events and impending threats. For them, it is just another opportunity to increase revenue with trends, statistics and death by PowerPoint.
As protectors of our children we cannot continue to rely on past emergency preparedness plans and procedures. Those are now passé.
In this uptick we must re-evaluate the current procedures and rewrite those plans from a perspective of experience, anticipation and empathy for the struggles of troubled children that fuels the aggression.
We have worked with schools in the past 28+ years and addressed many critical issues. We have provided school security; developed security plans and have been focused on this for many years. We have strong and experienced leaders ready and able to provide the guidance and assistance in the evolution of preparedness plans.
Our background in consulting and auditing and real-life experience in creating safe havens at schools have provided the experience that gives us a visionary ability to address your concerns to make your school a more secure and safe environment for all our children.
We have the knowledge base and experience to truly evaluate your systems and threats and develop a better plan to safeguard our children in learning environments.
